Overview

An article by Ihsaan Rahman, an established Mathematics, Physics, and Economics tutor of Latimer Tuition. What Students Don’t Realise Is What Actually Improves Their Grades Tutoring can be incredibly effective, but only when it’s treated as a partnership rather than a rescue mission. After several years of working with students, one thing is clear: Students who make the fastest progress aren’t always the most naturally talented. They’re the ones who understand how to use tutoring properly. That’s true whether a student is using online tutoring for GCSE, working with online A level tutors, or getting extra support through secondary school tutoring. Here’s how you can make every session count: Come With Specific Topics, Not Just Homework It’s completely normal to feel stuck, and if you never do, what’s the point of having tutoring at all? However, saying, “I don’t get this entire topic,” doesn’t give your tutor much to work with. Instead, work out exactly what it is in the topic that you’re struggling with. Can you link it to other related topics? Is it that there are too many equations? Or do you know the equations but don’t know how to use them effectively together? Instead, try: In online maths tutoring, that often means identifying the exact step in a method that stops making sense. For students doing English tutoring online, it may be understanding the text but struggling to build analysis and context into a longer response. When you attempt a question first, even if you get it wrong, that already shows us exactly where you’re going wrong. Learning improves dramatically when we can tailor our teaching to your specific mistake, helping you recognise and solve similar problems in future. Mistakes aren’t setbacks. They’re a necessary part of progress. Learning Isn’t Linear Let your tutor know what’s coming up. We can prepare far more effectively when we know your exam board, upcoming class tests or mocks, the topics covered at school, and the areas you feel less confident in. This is especially important in online GCSE tutoring and online A level tutoring, where sharing upcoming assessments and weaker topics helps your tutor plan more effectively. It’s not always about focusing on brand-new classroom content. Often, reinforcing older topics is far more valuable. One thing to understand is that grades will not always rise immediately. Performance often dips slightly before it improves. You’re revisiting older topics and exposing gaps, so building those new synaptic pathways takes time. You’re not just learning a topic, you’re learning it well enough not to forget it. That’s why you may experience a temporary dip before it starts to feel like second nature. All of this is happening while you’re balancing classwork, homework, and new content, so yes, it can get messy. Remember: understanding strengthens, knowledge consolidates, and results become consistent. Focus on Hard Questions, Not Easy Ones It’s tempting to practise the questions you’re already comfortable with: easy method, easy answer, easy marks. It makes you feel productive. But what’s the point in only doing what you’re already good at? Yes, you should revisit stronger areas so you don’t forget them, but not at the expense of the things that actually challenge you. Real progress happens when you: The same applies whether you’re working with an A level maths tutor online or receiving broader subject support. Even between sessions, one challenging question is more valuable than breezing through easy ones and feeling busy without really improving. Tutoring Takes Two Your tutor provides structure, feedback, and experience. You provide effort, honesty, and independence. When both sides work together, progress accelerates. Tutoring isn’t about being told answers. It’s about learning how to think more effectively. Students who approach tutoring this way build something far more important than short-term grade improvement: confidence, independence, and the ability to handle unfamiliar problems calmly. That’s what ultimately makes the biggest difference in exams. An article by Ihsaan Rahman, an established Mathematics, Physics, and Economics tutor of Latimer Tuition.

  • “I understand the first few points in this topic, but when it comes to core practicals, I don’t know how they apply.”
  • “I understand the information, but combining it with context in a 25-mark question is really challenging.”
  • “I know the equations, but I get stuck figuring out which one to use for this topic.”
  • attempt the questions you usually avoid, no matter how intimidating they seem;
  • spend time on the hardest parts of the topic that you don’t understand; and
  • review mistakes carefully rather than rushing ahead.
